One Minute Radio Blog™: Planned Parenting & Regrets

Opinion Columns

By Alicia M. Phidd, Esq.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida, April 5, 2012- Parenting and child rearing is such a delicate topic. We discussed this on the air today and the response was overwhelming. I believe many of us, both men and women would plan the birth of their children if it was totally in their control. Planned or not most persons I believe are quite happy once the child has arrived. Most mothers will often say they would never give up being a mother for anything in the world. We do know that some regret the decision and treats the child poorly or it may be one of the reasons for unofficial or official adoptions. Some will have momentary regrets manifested in postpartum depression.

I firmly believe that a strong support system is needed in the raising of children. So I end by saying if your family is not around, join mommy meetup groups online. There is paternal support online as well. Just remember there is no need to do it all by yourself because it takes a village to raise a child.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida, March 29, 2012- About 12.9% of the United States population is sixty five years and older.  This is the demographic we consider to be elderly.  So many people are taking care of their aging parents in one form or another.  The type of care sometimes boils down to anthropological differences or the family structure in general. On the radio today, the Caribbean demographic seems to maintain the culture of the children being the pension plan for the parents.  The stories were real but one most notably was a woman living in the U.S. taking care of her father in the islands.  This was so moving because she is the financier and she visits the island at least once a month to personally take care of him. It breaks her heart to see his debilitation.

I don’t have to deal with this phase of life as yet and I know it will not be easy.  My suggestions for those who are, are the following: remember your parent(s) in their glory days and it will make it emotionally easier in caring for them. Share the responsibility with siblings when you can.  Always, always find some time for yourself daily to take a deep breath to keep your health in check.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida, April 12, 2012- April is Poetry Month and Child Advocate Month. On the radio we discussed the latter focusing on children sexually abused by a relative. We did not approach it from the perspective of psychosis of the victim. This time it was about bridging the gap between law enforcement and the community. Law enforcement agencies across the country are getting the word out about Child Abuse Prevention and although the topic is uncomfortable, it exists. Too often victims are too afraid to tell authorities about the horrific experience. It was a call to action by law enforcement to have families and community members contact the authorities when they witness such an atrocity. This is an ugly, deep and dark act often kept a secret and this is the time to stand up to it. We should protect the children at all cost.

One Minute Radio Blog™: Pet Peeves
Opinion Columns
By Alicia M. Phidd, Esq.

South Florida, Thursday May 3, 2012- Today we got brave and wanted to know your pet peeves on the air. It was hilarious. Oftentimes we have quirks or just little things that annoy us, but we didn’t quite articulate it to anyone. Today we aired it all and it felt good to the listeners and to us. My pet peeve is licking your fingers at the dinner table. Quite frankly, licking your fingers in connection with a meal is just rude. The listeners had quirks such as how to place the toilet paper on its roll and women wanted the toilet seats up instead of down. Yes, you read it correctly. Women wanting the toilet seats down. When I asked the women if their pet peeve created a problem in their relationships, it was a unanimous “no”. It was good fun today and after a long week, it was great to laugh.
